April Update

This month I have added a new page to my website titled 'New Work'. As the name suggests it is a show case for on going projects and recent work.

For me, photography is always about exploring visual perception. I try to capture moments that I would have missed had I not been holding my camera and viewing the world with a hungry, photographer's eye.

This photograph is from a series that I am working on of B&W images of plants. The lack of colour immediately changes our perception of the subject and highlights the shapes and forms that we would never have seen with our coloured vision.

Portrait of the Month

This month's portrait is of Freya. She is nine years old and, unlike many people, she loves having her photo taken. Hopefully she will always be the same, until she's 90, but by then it probably won't be me taking her photo.

"Normally when I have my photo taken I'm just wearing an old black jumper but this time I was wearing a big, big orange hat, which I thought was a bit crazy.

I love having my picture taken I would recommend Hannah to everyone."

All portrait sessions work on a 'No Win, No Fee' basis, if you don't like the results then you don't have to pay for it.

March Update

Hannah Palmer Photography - March Update

A huge thanks to everyone who came to our exhibition and commiserations to those who couldn't make it. It was a very successful event and keen eyed collectors snapped up some great work.

A couple of my photos are now going to be on show at Underground Gallery (near exit 9 of Charing Cross underground station) in a group exhibition from Monday 26th to Saturday 31st March, 11am-5.30pm. Private View on Tuesday 27th, 6pm-9pm.

I will be at the gallery all day on Wednesday 28th so if you're in the area please drop in.

A larger collection of my work is going to be on display at the Pump Court Tax Chambers on Bedford Row until November.

And I have just entered the photograph below to be considered for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Hopefully the judges like it as much as I do.

The Douro
This photo was taken on a trip to Portugal with my wonderful Hassleblad 500C/M camera. Built in the 1970s it takes trade mark square images on medium format film. The Hasselblad negatives are 6"x6", giving you much more information in each shot compared to the 35mm negatives that one gets from a standard film camera.

This was the first time that I had used the camera and, as I subsequently found out, it was suffering from a bad light leak. This is one of the only images that survived from several roles of film. So hopefully it is a lucky shot!

Portrait of the Month

This month's portrait is of Lara.

"Having never had any kind of portrait done before visiting Hannah, I was a little nervous about the process and how I might look. I need not have worried. The combination of Hannah's professionalism and relaxed demeanor made me instantly relaxed.

The whole process was really enjoyable and as we laughed and talked I wasn't particularly aware of a camera even being in the room. Being photographed in this way has resulted in me having a selection of pictures that are a true representation of me. I love them".

This month's portrait is of the Allans.

"My brothers and I are thrilled with the photos that Hannah has taken, which were a 50th birthday present for our parents. She has a refreshingly relaxed approach and manner, putting us all at ease, including my impatient 8 year old brother. The whole experience was a pleasure, from studio session through to delivery of the terrific portraits."

Lesson One: Try to smile when photographing yourself.

January Update

Happy New Year to you all.

This is the first of my new monthly newsletters, a chance for me to keep you updated on my projects and show you some examples of what I've been working on.

My website has had a January de-clutter and has been pared down to represent my two main photographic interests, portraits and exhibition prints. So please click HERE to browse.

I have been working hard in my Fulham studio creating portraits for a wide range of people from family groups to individuals and even myself, with some amusing self portraits as a result. If you're lucky one might be February's Photo of the Month.

January has also meant getting back to the darkroom and starting work on a collection of prints for a future exhibition. I am also currently planning to have an interim, group exhibition within the next couple of months, so watch this space.

Rosalie Watkins is an amazing portrait painter who trains and works at Lavender Hill Studios in Battersea.

"Hannah makes having your portrait taken a very relaxed and unintimidating experience. I don't usually like pictures of myself but I thought that these were beautifully composed, thoughtful portraits."
